In December of 2012, members of SEAL Team Six traveled to a Taliban compound where an American doctor was being held hostage. One of the SEALs, Edward Byers, subdued a Taliban captor and then flung himself on top of the doctor to shield him from gunfire while pinning a second Taliban captor to the wall. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions.
The heroic actions of Edward Byers are admirable. He put his life on the line to save someone else. They are also reminiscent of another example of heroic self-sacrifice. Because we were being held hostage to sin, Jesus traveled to earth, subdued our captor, shielded us from harm by putting His life on the line, and was awarded the highest honors by God the Father. Jesus sacrificed Himself “to rescue us” (Galatians 1:4)!
